Newton Aycliffe bounced back from recent disappointments with two win in the last week.
After last Saturday’s crucial home league win over Ryhope, the Newtonians beat Ryton 5-0 in the League Cup at Moore Lane Park on Tuesday night.
Aycliffe had injuries and rested a few players. Nathan Stephenson was one of those who came in, and the Ryton defence struggled with his willingness to run off the ball and hold the ball up and lay it off for his teammates. He tried to lob the Ryton keeper on 12 minutes, and narrowly missed.
But Stephenson wasn’t to be denied and finished well on 22 minutes, after being put through by Jack Oliver.
There was a decisive moment in the game on 34 minutes, when Ryton’s Mitchell was sent off for a second yellow card.
Ryton dropped deeper in the second half. That made it harder for Aycliffe to break through, and they had to wait until the 59th minute. Paul Weldon put in a good cross from the left, which Stuart Banks controlled well and smashed it low into the corner of the net for 2-0.
Aycliffe stalwart Dan Mitton came on for the last 18 minutes, following a lengthy lay-off for a knee injury.
As Ryton tired, Aycliffe made inroads and got another three goals in the last 15 minutes thanks to Oliver, Kurt Matthews and Banks.
Aycliffe return to league action this weekend, when they go to seventh-placed Consett in the Northern League first division.
