Tom Warke reviews his Album of the Week, Jason Mraz’s Love Is a Four Letter Word…
American singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, was born in Mechanicsville, Virginia in 1977.
From Czech decent through his grandfather, Mraz had a keen interest in music from an early age.
In 2001 he released a live acoustic album, ‘Live at Java Joes’, which was a coffee house in Ocean Beach, San Diego. The album became available to buy on iTunes in 2008, named ‘Jason Mraz: Live & Acoustic 2001’.
Mraz released his debut album ‘Waiting for My Rocket to Come’ in 2002. This album featured the hit song ‘The Remedy’ which showed Mraz free-styling ability and his lyrical talent.
It was his second album, however, that earned Mraz his commercial recognition, ‘Mr A-Z’ peaked at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 100,000 copies in the USA.
‘We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things’, Mraz’s third studio album was released in 2008. The album peaked at number three in the Billboard 200 and was a popular success worldwide, peaking in the top ten of many international charts.
From his ‘We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things’ album, Mraz’s international breakthrough came from the release of the single ‘I’m Yours’.
The single peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, giving him his first top ten single. His single success with ‘I’m Yours’ made Mraz nominated for Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards.
Jason Mraz released his fourth studio album ‘Love Is a Four Letter Word’, earlier this month.
Having received favourable reviews already, this album looks set to be a part of most people’s music collection.
The album’s lead single ‘I Won’t Give Up’ is one of the best on this album, its soft acoustic start gently builds up to a choired chorus later in the song, where you can truly feel Mraz’s passion for music.
Another great track on this album is ‘The World as I See It’, the beautiful lyrics are surrounded by soft guitar rhythms and the shake of a tambourine throughout.
My favourite and stand out song from the album is ’93 Million Miles’.
Widely praised for his song-writing, Mraz has crafted this song to give listeners inspiration to take a chance and live their own experiences. But the fitting lyrics of this song are that ‘You Can Always Come Back Home’.
