Sunday will represent a proud day in the history of Woodham College when two people from the school will carry the Olympic Torch.
Student Richie Howe will carry the Torch, which passes through Aycliffe shortly after 3.30pm on Sunday, for a 300-metre stint in Darlington.
The school’s PE teacher and Assistant Head Teacher, Jon Tait, will also get his hands on the iconic flame during his lap in Hartburn, Stockton.
And Mr Tait says it’ll be a monumental occasion for Woodham.
“To have two Torch-bearers from the school is amazing,” he told Aycliffe Today.
“I teach Richie and he’s part of my American football team, so to have two from the same PE team is amazing.
“I’m really proud of Richie and I know the school is as well, and it’s brilliant that we have two representatives out of only 8,000 throughout the whole country.”
Mr Tait also reckons there’ll be extra reason to celebrate on Sunday, which will make for an emotional occasion.
He added: “It’s Father’s Day on Sunday, my wife will be there with my children so it will be very emotional.
“It’s only going to be here once in our lifetime, I think the last time was about 68 years ago, so we’re probably never going to see it again.
“I’m getting Goosebumps now even just talking about it, there’ll be a range of emotions but an amazing feeling that I’ll probably never replicate again.”
