Durham County Council has announced it will once again offer free parking after 3pm in its car parks this festive season.
The local authority’s Free After 3pm scheme will return on Monday, December 16, and run through to Friday, January 4.
The aim is to encourage people to shop on their local high streets and to visit the county’s hospitality venues this Christmas.
The scheme will be in operation at local authority car parks, with the exception of Hardwick Park, Wharton Park, Chester-le-Street Riverside Park, Noses Point in Seaham and on-street pay and display bays.
Cllr Elizabeth Scott, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: “The festive period is the most important time of the year for the retail and hospitality sector, and we want to make it even easier for people to support their local high streets.
“County Durham’s city, towns and villages are home to many fantastic independent shops, cafes, restaurants and cultural venues, making them ideal destinations to stock up on gifts and get together with friends and family over the festive season.
“By offering free parking after 3pm, we hope to increase footfall further at this crucial time.”
Stickers promoting Free After 3pm will be displayed at all participating council car park payment points.
Machines will still accept payment during this time, and no refunds will be given. Motorists are therefore advised to look out for the stickers and check the time before making a payment.
